A time capsule was stashed away in the cornerstone of a Masonic lodge in Reno from the year 1872.
What was inside this artifact?

Leaders of the Freemasons and local experts joined Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve last month to unveil the
materials from inside the lead box. The time capsule was hidden in what was recently the oldest
standing commercial building in the city founded four years after Nevada was granted statehood in
1864.

Inside they discovered silver dollars minted in Carson City and San Francisco, and a piece of wood from
Sutter’s Mill where the discovery of gold sparked the California Gold Rush. Other items inside were a
quartz specimen from the drill at Sutter’s Mill, a harmonica, a business card from the Young Men’s
Christian Association (YMCA)

Lake Tahoe has water so deep it could sink the Empire State Building and you still wouldn’t see the top. Combined with the surrounding tall mountains and ski resorts make Tahoe a winter paradise.

Tahoe’s ski areas are all within easy reach of one another, our top three each have a distinct look, personality and audience. What’s great about those three is that they are all operated by Vail Resorts and can be ridden with one Epic Pass. Next month is the Epic Pass’s 10th anniversary and the program now offers access to 46 ski resorts in seven countries around the world!

There’s still time to get your Tahoe mountain high. Most resorts won’t close until early April (if not later, depending on the late season alpine

After going through the toughest recession in its history, Northern Nevada has hit some major economic development victories.

Last year, 156.4 million pounds of cargo came through Reno’s airport the three to four weeks prior to Christmas. This whopping number was an all-time record for the facility. And the airport isn’t the only player in the region to see shipping traffic “take off”.

The improving economy has combined successfully with the increased adoption of e-commerce, which has help fuel an increase in the number of new warehouses and distribution center. Add a growing manufacturing base producing items from cheese to pet food to electric batteries, and Northern Nevada continues its transformation as a distribution mecca. Storage and

Many Nevadans get a three-day weekend to celebrate our great state, but we also get to celebrate the history behind it.

Nevada Day is October 31, but it is traditionally observed on the Friday before. The day is a celebration of when Nevada became a state during the civil war. Every year students at elementary schools across the state are taught this history and take part in dozens of activities that made Nevada what it is today – panning for gold, learning about Nevada’s original postal operations and taking part in native dances created by some of the state’s most historic tribes.

State buildings and schools will be closed on Friday, October 27, but federal buildings will remain open. The Nevada Day Parade will take place in Carson City on

At the start of September, Amazon.com announced their plan to build a secondary North American headquarters.

The announcement has opened up a bidding war to be a second home for the online retailer.

“We expect HQ2 to be a full equal to our Seattle headquarters,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and CEO, in a press release issued by the company. “Amazon HQ2 will bring billions of dollars in up-front and ongoing investments, and tens of thousands of high-paying jobs. We’re excited to find a second home.”

The state of Nevada has offered subsides, tax breaks and other incentives to land corporate footprints for Apple, Tesla, Panasonic, Switch and Google, along with others. The Amazon press release included a bulleted list of conditions for its new

On August 21, eighty-five percent of the sun in the Reno area will be covered in darkness by the Great American Eclipse.

The last time an American total eclipse bathed the continent was in 1979, however it didn’t reach coast to coast. On the morning of the 21, the sky will look gray and overcast in prediction of the upcoming eclipse. The sun will go completely dark for about 2-3 minutes in other parts of the United States, from parts of Oregon all the way to Charleston, South Carolina.

“It stretches coast to coast and the United States is the only place in the world that gets to see this,” said Dan Ruby from the Fleischmann Planetarium and Science Center in Reno.

One of the perks of being in Reno is that residents can see the partial eclipse
