Many Nevadans get a three-day weekend to celebrate our great state, but we also get to celebrate the history behind it.

Nevada Day is October 31, but it is traditionally observed on the Friday before. The day is a celebration of when Nevada became a state during the civil war. Every year students at elementary schools across the state are taught this history and take part in dozens of activities that made Nevada what it is today – panning for gold, learning about Nevada’s original postal operations and taking part in native dances created by some of the state’s most historic tribes.

State buildings and schools will be closed on Friday, October 27, but federal buildings will remain open. The Nevada Day Parade will take place in Carson City on

This Saturday and Sunday the 36th annual Great Italian Festival will turn the streets of downtown Reno into a celebration of Italian heritage. 




Virginia Street and surrounding intersections will be transformed by booths serving delicious-smelling foods like chicken Parmesan, tortellini, fried ravioli, calamari, lasagna and of course, spaghetti and meatballs. The streets will be filled with live performances along with two stages that will feature a magician and fabulous Italian singers. You will also find grape stomp competitions, all of which are fun and free. Don't forget to pick up a pasta muffin tin for unlimited sauce tastings (it's only $4!).

Marking its fifth anniversary, Reno Bites Week expands to 10 days this year. 




This annual celebration of Reno food culture will extend from October 7 – 16, while the first four years of the events were seven days long. Also new this year is participation by the local casinos including Bistro Napa in the Atlantis, Brew Brothers in the Eldorado, Canter's Deli in the Silver Legacy and El Jefe's Cantina in Circus Circus.  


This week features nearly 30 restaurants (including 12 new to the event) that will offer various specials, prix fixe menus and signature events. The popular Chef Showdown, a cook-off showcasing top local chefs, returns this year to Czyz's Appliance.
