This month at the Winter Olympics in Korea, there are eight Reno-Tahoe athletes who are going for the gold.

Jamie Anderson from South Lake Tahoe has scored gold in the snowboarding slopestyle. We have the latest updates on all of our local athletes and how they are doing in the competition.

Bryce Bennett

Bryce Bennett is a Tahoe native and a part of the men's alpine skiing squad. He was born in Squaw Valley and calls Tahoe City his current home. In the alpine combine, Bennett was 17th of the 37 skiiers and had a combined time of 2:09.97. For the competition each skier takes on run in the downhill and one in the slalom – the fastest combined time wins. Bennett was in 23rd after his downhill run and his slalom time bumped him up a whole six

The Reno Airport just got more chic and stylish – the new Escape Lounge is now open for relaxation and connectivity.

Opening on December 15, the Escape Lounge is the latest in style, food, drink and connection. Located just beyond the security connector joining concourses B and C at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, this getaway spot has arrived just in time for the holidays.

Unlike other airport lounges, Escape is open to all passengers in whichever class of service. Fees are $40 in advance and $45 for walk-in. American Express Platinum Card holders get the added perk of free access. The lounge is open daily from 4:30 am to 8pm and bookings can be made through their online service.

Over the weekend, the Tahoe Sierra ski resorts welcomed fresh powder to their slopes.

Those resorts are counting down to the 2017-18 season. Sugar Bowl reported the most snowfall of 14” and Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows was close behind at 12”. Boreal up at Donner Summit had 7” of powder and Mt. Rose reported 3-4”.

Lake Tahoe is more than just a ski destination – it’s a way of life. The beautiful alpine lake has produced many famous athletes. Olympic gold medalist Julia Mancuso grew up in Squaw Valley, also known as Olympic Valley and host of the 1960 Winter Games. North Lake Tahoe hosts the Spartan Race World Championship for the third consecutive year in a row. 

From September 30 to October 1, Squaw Valley Ski Resort will be transformed into the obstacle racing's preeminent championship event. Featuring more than 10,000 of the world's greatest athletes from more than 30 countries, the event will be entertaining for spectators and racers alike. Competitors will go head to head to win $100,000 in cash and prizes, as part of the $500,000 in cash and prizes awarded during the 2017 race season – the most of any singular Spartan Race.

At the start of September, Amazon.com announced their plan to build a secondary North American headquarters.

The announcement has opened up a bidding war to be a second home for the online retailer.

“We expect HQ2 to be a full equal to our Seattle headquarters,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and CEO, in a press release issued by the company. “Amazon HQ2 will bring billions of dollars in up-front and ongoing investments, and tens of thousands of high-paying jobs. We’re excited to find a second home.”

The Reno area stays fit with a new indoor climbing facility.

Mesa Rim Climbing and Fitness Center has just opened at 970 Harvard Way in Reno and will provide another of the many fitness options for Northern Nevadans. Reno and Tahoe have a large population of fitness enthusiasts, most likely due to the many fantastic outdoor recreation options.

“Reno is such an amazing outdoor community,” said Marlowe Kulley, co-founder and manager of the Reno facility. “For people who love the outdoors, this is a great way to train. The goal with our facility is to create not only a big and impressive facility, but an all encompassing facility.”
