The Cyclocross National Championships were just held near the University of Nevada, Reno, over the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend.

Las Vegas’ CrossVegas is one of the best-known cyclocross events in the U.S. and the first place that a World Cup was hosted, so it only makes sense that the event should come to Reno. Right? The 2018 USA Cyclocross National Championships took over Rancho San Rafael Regional Park from Tuesday, January 9 until Sunday, January 14.

North Lake Tahoe hosts the Spartan Race World Championship for the third consecutive year in a row. 

From September 30 to October 1, Squaw Valley Ski Resort will be transformed into the obstacle racing's preeminent championship event. Featuring more than 10,000 of the world's greatest athletes from more than 30 countries, the event will be entertaining for spectators and racers alike. Competitors will go head to head to win $100,000 in cash and prizes, as part of the $500,000 in cash and prizes awarded during the 2017 race season – the most of any singular Spartan Race.  

There will be 500 elite athletes from more than 30 countries as well that will put their skills and conditioning to the test in both individual and team

Airplane racing is the world’s fastest motor sport and returns to the Reno skies this week.

 

When viewed in person as planes dart across the sky above the crowd, the event is quite spectacular. People from all across the country come out to Reno for the heart-pounding action September 13 – 17.

“For the general public, it’s the type of aviation event they can’t see anywhere else, no other show flies this low and close to the crowd so the excitement is there; and nowhere else can you walk through the pits and get close to all of the different planes and the pilots,” said sport class president, Bob Mills, who will be racing for his seventh year.

The Reno area stays fit with a new indoor climbing facility.

Mesa Rim Climbing and Fitness Center has just opened at 970 Harvard Way in Reno and will provide another of the many fitness options for Northern Nevadans. Reno and Tahoe have a large population of fitness enthusiasts, most likely due to the many fantastic outdoor recreation options.

“Reno is such an amazing outdoor community,” said Marlowe Kulley, co-founder and manager of the Reno facility. “For people who love the outdoors, this is a great way to train. The goal with our facility is to create not only a big and impressive facility, but an all encompassing facility.”

The Barracuda Championship is back again for another exciting display from skilled golfers.

The 19th annual Barracuda Championship is underway this week, with tournament play starting Thursday, August 3. The pro-ams took place earlier in the week and the results can be viewed on their website. The tournament, fondly dubbed the “Cuda Champ”, is one on only 46 full-field stops during the PGA TOUR Season and a part of the FedEx Cup series, a point competition for the players. Best of all, it takes places in our very own Montreux community! Some of the golfers are playing the Jack Nicklaus Signature course for the first time and some are returning. Imagine Tahoe’s crystal blue waters… turned into a sea of white sails!

Nearly 100 Laser Class sailboats bobbed merrily through the water in a four-day race for the U.S. Laser National Championships and U.S. Singlehanded Championships. The Tahoe Yacht Club hosted the event for the first time and is by far the most prestigious event the club has put on to date. Laser Fleet Captain and Tahoe Yacht Club Commodore Rick Raduziner was sure it was the largest sailing competition on the lake in several decades.

Conditions were ideal for the 13th Reno Tahoe Odyssey, a 178-mile annual relay races that winds through Reno and Tahoe.

One newly-formed, elite team set a course record this year. Dubbing themselves Fueled by Isagenix, the team completed the loop in 17 hours, 7 minutes and 52 seconds. This put them at an unbelievable pace of 5:46 per mile, reaching the finish line at Idlewild Park at 9 a.m. Saturday morning after the 4 p.m. start on Friday afternoon.

Fueled beat the previous record of 17:13:51, previously held by Nutz. The Fueled team is made up of runners from both Reno and Bend, Oregon. Team captain Jeff Limpert was excited to put together a team to compete with two already established elites: the Runny

The world’s first high desert biome eco-district is planned for Reno, NV.

The initial phases have just been proposed by architect and developer Don J Clark Group in conjunction with the landscape architects Office of Cheryl Barton. A new $1.2 billion purpose-built neighborhood will transform West 2nd District in the heart of Reno.

By taking a series of underutilized lots, the project hopes to jumpstart an ecologically driven neighborhood with 1,900 housing units, 4,500 square feet of office space and 250,000 square feet of retail. Nearly 30 buildings will be included in the space and provide market-rate and workforce housing.
