At the end of a trail, hikers will find a beautiful 30-foot waterfall, perfect for a relaxing picnic or dipping your toes into the icy water. The trail is well-marked and suitable for all ages, including kids and dogs. The trailhead features a parking area, restrooms, and water fountains. Be sure to bring sunscreen and plenty of water, as about the first two-thirds of the trail is exposed. Avoid this trail after fresh rainfall or snow melt, as it can become very muddy and slippery.

Thomas Creek

Distance: 4.4 miles

Elevation Gain: 1,272 feet

Rating: Moderate 

The Thomas Creek trail is located in the Galena Forest and is a popular hiking destination for scores of outdoor enthusiasts. There is ample parking at the trailhead, located just off of Mt. Rose Highway in Reno. On a typical spring or fall weekend, you will find hikers, horses, and bike riders sharing the path.

Galena Falls

Distance: 4.8 miles

Elevation Gain: 488 feet

Rating: Moderate 

This trail offers fantastic views with minimal elevation gain. Hikers enjoy an interesting high alpine environment due to the higher elevation. This is a popular option for families, small children, and pets as there are no steep inclines. The trail offers a moderate amount of shade throughout and features a beautiful waterfall for great photos. Some parts of this trail can be narrow. The trailhead is just above Reno, a mere 15 minute drive from Galena Forest, Montreux Golf & Country Club, and The Club at ArrowCreek.

Truckee River Trail

Distance: 3.5 miles

Elevation Gain: 45 feet

Rating: Easy 

This urban walkway is paved and takes you through eclectic downtown Reno and along the Truckee River. The trail can be taken in either direction and you will run into the peaceful Idlewild Park, local shopping, and local coffee shops/restaurants. This trail is accessible with a paved surface, edge barriers, railings, and is 4 to 6 feet wide (with many wider passing spaces). Accessible parking spots are also at the trailhead. The majority of the trail is estimated to be in the gentle grade category (3% or less) and is likely navigable for most wheelchairs, mobility equipment, and strollers. There are benches and picnic tables along the trail.
