Lake Tahoe is known for it’s clear, summer nights and skies full of twinkling stars. Northern Nevada is blessed with more than 300 days of sunshine a year and this translates into blue-bird days followed by silver-studded night skies. When you see the stars reflected on the surface of the lake’s still, deep waters you will be stunned into silence. The sight is treasured by many and would enhance anyone’s love of astronomy. The universe holds so much beauty and you can join one of the many Lake Tahoe stargazing tours this summer to drink it all in.
Tahoe Star Tours has dates beginning on June 14 and running all the way through the summer until September 1. When you sign up, you won’t be gazing through just any old telescopes, you’ll get the chance to use their high-powered Celestron telescopes. Docents will stand-by as you gaze, sharing all sorts of wondrous, science-based facts about the stars and sky above. The Dark Skis Cosmoarium is a hop, skip and a jump away from the North Shore over at Northstar California Resort. Sign up any nights Thursday through Saturday and the kids can come too. The owner of Tahoe Star Tours, Tony Berendsen, will give an informative Star Tour Astronomy presentation at each gaze-fest. Enjoy complimentary hot chocolate and s’mores to keep your energy up and your eyes alert. Tours will begin a little later in the evening because it’s Summer and the days are longer. Expect to spend about two hours immersing yourself in the experience.
Before, or after, your tour, don’t forget to swing by the lake for a dip, or plan a camping stay. Tahoe is one of the few places in the world where you can ski and swim in the same day. Don’t forget to grab your paddle board, or mountain bike, to enjoy the lake-wide recreational opportunities. The official opening for beaches and campgrounds is this weekend and the action should be sweet. See all the opening dates below:
