Pro-Ams and Previews: The 2017 Barracuda Championship

The Barracuda Championship is back again for another exciting display from skilled golfers.

The 19th annual Barracuda Championship is underway this week, with tournament play starting Thursday, August 3. The pro-ams took place earlier in the week and the results can be viewed on their website. The tournament, fondly dubbed the “Cuda Champ”, is one on only 46 full-field stops during the PGA TOUR Season and a part of the FedEx Cup series, a point competition for the players. Best of all, it takes places in our very own Montreux community! Some of the golfers are playing the Jack Nicklaus Signature course for the first time and some are returning. Either way, all of the participants leave with a love of the challenging course – one of the Golden Bear’s favorites!

The Golf Channel broadcasts the event internationally, so you can tune in every evening at 6pm and see the gorgeous Reno-Tahoe area and the stunning Montreux community for yourself. A total of 132 players will take on the changing elevations of the golf course for a purse of $3.3 million.

The event is unique on the PGA Tour due to its modified stableford format scoring and this year it has drawn some very big names in golf. Household names competing this week include Padraig Harrington, Davis Love III and his son Dru Love, Retief Goosen, Hunter Mahan and Angel Cabrera.

Harrington earned his fame on tour when he turned professional in the mid 90’s coupled with three Major Championship wins in 2007 and 2008. Having recently captained the victorious United States Ryder Cup team, Love III will be playing along with his son Dru who was a standout at the University of Alabama. When not playing together, the two will typically caddy for each other in big tourneys like the U.S. Open. Love III is going to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in October.

Another tour staple, Mahan turned professional out of Oklahoma State and racked up six victories along with making an appearance in the 2010 U.S. Ryder Cup team. While Cabrera and Goosen are recognized internationally, they still have big wins here in the states. Cabrera was victorious at the 2007 U.S. Open and the 2009 Masters while Goosen took home U.S. Open wins in both 2001 and 2004.

General admission tickets to the tournament are only $25 dollars and the 18th hole has something different this year. They’ve built a big patio with front row seats to the action and refreshments on hang. The venue is about 5,000-6,000 sqft. and open to anyone with a ticket. The tables right up front are arguably some of the best seats in the house.

The event is family-friendly and kids 15 and under get in free with a ticketed adult. If your young one isn’t interested in golf (yet!), the Discovery Museum is back again this year with educational games teaching science through golf.

Barracuda Championship even helps give back to the community. They will be hosting several fundraising events at the tournament where participants could win great prizes like TVs, local fitness memberships and more. They are sponsored by local businesses and keep the fundraising efforts going year-round.

The Montreux community is truly a special place and many players have left impressed by the condition of the course, the friendliness of the residents and the efforts of the staff. This event is just another one of the many reasons why the Reno-Tahoe area is the perfect place to call home.
