Vintage Cars and Music at Reno Hot August Nights

Posted by Brooke Sullivan on Wednesday, August 8th, 2018 at 5:45pm

The first Hot August Nights kicked off in 1986 when a fleet of classic autos made their appearance on the lawn of Rancho San Rafael Regional Park in Reno, NV.

The cars were being shown off by their owners and, true to form, onlookers marveled at the timeless beauty. Hot August Nights is a celebration of classic rock and roll and cars. The year is the 32nd annual event and Reno’s biggest street festival. Events will continue throughout the week that appeal to all ages. Virginia City celebrated last week before the party settled into the streets of Reno and Sparks. Almost all the hotel-casinos are hosting show n shines and other competitions, with free entertainment to boot.

Some of the events this year include:

▪ The Vintage Trailer Revival on Aug. 8 with participants showing off their 1976-and-older trailers at Rancho San Rafael in front of judges Justin and Anna Scribner of the Travel Channel’s “Flippin’ RVs.”

▪ Free entertainment in the parking lot of the Grand Sierra: Eddie Money on Thursday, Starship on Friday and Kool and the Gang on Saturday (8:15 p.m.)

▪ Competing free entertainment at Victorian Plaza in Sparks: Michael Furlong’s Tribute to Tom Petty on Thursday, The Greg Kihn Band on Friday and Ambrosia on Saturday (8:15 p.m.) For the full schedule, go to www.HotAugustNights.net.

TOTO and their “40 Trips around the Sun” tour arrive at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno on Saturday bringing the classic rock to the downtown scene. The identically-named greatest-hits album came out last month and sheds light on the under-appreciated impact of the band. The rockers have played on more than 5,000 albums by themselves and other artists.

The Village People’s current incarnation will play a pool party at the GSR on Friday.

Only Otis Williams remains of the original Temptations and his group will play at the MontBleu in South Lake Tahoe on Friday. The boppers will be covering the astonishing range of the repertoire, from “The Way You Do the Things You Do” to the edgy “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” to their more romantic rendition of “Treat Her Like a Lady”.

The MontBleu will also play host to its annual Hops in the Yard Beerfest on Saturday and will feature the reggae rapper Matisyahu taking the stage that night. Matisyahu just released his eighth album, an eight-song cycle called “Undercurrent” that chronicles his personal journey.

And finally, for all the country fans out there, the Thunder Valley will have a big weekend featuring powerhouse performer Brad Paisley, guest-starring Rachel Steele. Soul Fest 18 will take place at TVB on Saturday with a great lineup including the Whispers and Midnight Star.
