Memorial Day weekend is a time to remember those who have fallen serving in the military as well as honor those are serving. The three-day weekend is also the unofficial start to summer and a great time to enjoy all of the great activities around Reno.

HRPS Guided Walking Tours

On Saturday, May 25, the Historic Reno Preservation Society (HRPS) will conduct guided walks through some of Reno’s historic districts. This walk is entitled “West of Wells” and will stroll through one of Reno’s most significant areas that is now being restored.

Ride the V&T Railroad

On Saturday and Sunday, May 25 and 26, train rides on the Virginia and Truckee Railroad (V&T) kick off for the summer. They will have live music, mimosas for the parents and face painting for kids at the Eastgate Station before departing for Virginia City. Weekend trains will be pulled by a 1916 Baldwin Consolidation 2-8-0 or a 1914 Baldwin 2-8-2 steam engine leading three 1914 Pullman cars. Call (877) 724-5007 for tickets.

Take a Memorial Day Hike

The Truckee Meadows has so many walking trails nearby that there is no excuse not to get outside on a beautiful day. You can take an easy stroll or challenge yourself with a more strenuous trek. A popular destination for families is the Galena Creek Visitor’s Center, which hosts guided hikes on Saturdays.

The Discovery Museum

The Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum will be open all weekend including on Monday, May 27. There will be organized activities for the weekend, but there are many things for both kids and adults to enjoy, see and do at this hands-on center. There is free parking next to the museum and a fun donut shop called Holey Schmidt Donuts if you’re looking for a sweet treat.

Wild Island Family Adventure Park

The water park at Wild Island in Sparks will be open all of Memorial Day weekend. The Coconut Bowl and other attractions will also be open. This park is always a hit with the kids with the water slides, wave pool and the lazy river all offering varying levels of fun for a wide range of ages. Kids and adults love it, plus there are go-karts and other fun games to enjoy over at the Coconut Bowl.

The Reno Aces

The Aces will compete Saturday through Tuesday in a series of games at the Greater Nevada Field. Every match is up against the Las Vegas Aviators and will feature fun promotions like a hat giveaway and varying food specials. Enjoy minor league baseball in a beautiful setting – the crowd is always fun and friendly at these games!
