Over the weekend, the Tahoe Sierra ski resorts welcomed fresh powder to their slopes.

Those resorts are counting down to the 2017-18 season. Sugar Bowl reported the most snowfall of 14” and Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows was close behind at 12”. Boreal up at Donner Summit had 7” of powder and Mt. Rose reported 3-4”.

North Lake Tahoe hosts the Spartan Race World Championship for the third consecutive year in a row.

Featuring more than 10,000 of the world's greatest athletes from more than 30 countries, the event will be entertaining for spectators and racers alike. Competitors will go head to head to win $100,000 in cash and prizes, as part of the $500,000 in cash and prizes awarded during the 2017 race season – the most of any singular Spartan Race.

Lake Tahoe got so much snow, people are talking about skiing all summer into next season.

Andy Wirth, CEO of Squaw Valley, has proposed that the resort stay open through the Fourth of July weekend – if not all the way into the 2017-18 winter season. After the most snow in more than 20 years, some of the Lake’s ski resorts saw more 700 inches of snowfall.

“I’ll drop something on you that you may not be expecting,” Wirth told Truckee Tahoe Radio on April 15. “We are actually considering staying open through the summer and fall so it becomes the ’16-17-18 season. We’re taking a hard look at that. Maybe we spin Shirley [a lift on the mountain’s back side] through the summer, ‘cause there’s so much snow up there.”

Lake Tahoe is enjoying the largest snowpack in 22 years.

Experts say that the snow will last until mid-summer and several of the local ski resorts are extending their season into June – some even to the Fourth of July. This translates to excellent spring conditions and dual days, the term used to describe weather perfect for multiple activities.

Ski in the morning and go kayaking or hiking in the afternoon. While you’re at it, don’t forget to stop at the area’s best and newest restaurants and bars.

North Lake

Mount Rose Ski Tahoe has the most snow in North America with 700 inches of snowfall, according to the National Weather Service. That equates to the height of the Yerba Buena Tunnel on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Their

Lake Tahoe received seven feet of snow in just seven days.

Heavenly Ski Resort and Squaw-Alpine Meadows both received over 80 inches in the seven days totals that began on Valentine’s Day. The winter snow total for Heavenly is now approaching 550 inches.

Vail Resorts announced on February 22 in a press release that both Heavenly and Northstar will be extending their scheduled closing days by at least a week this year. The resorts will close April 30.

Other resorts in the area are even more ambitious. Squaw-Alpine plans to stay open until the Fourth of July this year. The large resort has seen some 565 inches of total snowfall this season – that’s over 47 feet.

Last season, chairlifts in Tahoe were turning for nearly seven months making one of the longest ski season in recent memory. This year resorts around the area are ready for another big season with ongoing capital improvements, new VIP services and air service.
