The number of visitors to the Reno-Sparks and Washoe County regions over the past year has topped the 5 million mark for the first time since 2007.

What caused the increased visitation for fiscal year 2017? The Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority and area policymakers have a few ideas. The U.S. economy is stronger than ever, and this has led to a renewed push to market the Reno-Tahoe Area, plus all of the buzz from the arrival of high-profile tech companies including Apple, Google and Tesla.

In 2002, this region was in the midst of an economic boom that tracked nearly 5.7 million tourists. The housing bubble popped five years later when the recession hit and tourism fell as expected. Visitor counts fell by nearly a quarter to as low as

Companies looking to relocate are flocking to Northern Nevada - why?

The Reno-Sparks region has become a distribution mecca, due mostly in part to its proximity to I-80. Nancy McCormick is the vice president of business retention, expansion and workforce for the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN) and they use I-80 as a selling point. According to data from EDAWN, the area has one-day truck service to the Bay Area, Sacramento, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Portland and Boise. Add an extra 24-hours and two-day service is available to Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico.

"We have immediate access to port of entry in California and logistically can reach locations in 11 western states within 24 - 48 hours," said McCormick. "It's

All women, all entrepreneurs, all inspired.

Inspire Reno is changing up the business game for women in Reno. Susan Ackerman was struck with a vision when she attended an all-women entrepreneur event. After seeing folks listening attentively to a workshop leader, huddled around tables networking over coffee, a room full of like-minded people who are chock-full of ideas, she knew. She went to the owner and asked to lease the building housing the event, a historic mansion disguised as an office building along the Truckee River in downtown Reno.

From that, Inspire Reno, a women’s entrepreneurial development center, was born. Ackerman is an author, speaker, motivator and entrepreneur in her own right. When she got the go-ahead to lease the 3,900

After going through the toughest recession in its history, Northern Nevada has hit some major economic development victories.

Last year, 156.4 million pounds of cargo came through Reno’s airport the three to four weeks prior to Christmas. This whopping number was an all-time record for the facility. And the airport isn’t the only player in the region to see shipping traffic “take off”.

The improving economy has combined successfully with the increased adoption of e-commerce, which has help fuel an increase in the number of new warehouses and distribution center. Add a growing manufacturing base producing items from cheese to pet food to electric batteries, and Northern Nevada continues its transformation as a distribution mecca. Storage and

Many Nevadans get a three-day weekend to celebrate our great state, but we also get to celebrate the history behind it.

Nevada Day is October 31, but it is traditionally observed on the Friday before. The day is a celebration of when Nevada became a state during the civil war. Every year students at elementary schools across the state are taught this history and take part in dozens of activities that made Nevada what it is today – panning for gold, learning about Nevada’s original postal operations and taking part in native dances created by some of the state’s most historic tribes.

State buildings and schools will be closed on Friday, October 27, but federal buildings will remain open. The Nevada Day Parade will take place in Carson City on

AT&T has fulfilled last year’s promise and brought gigabit-speed internet to Reno.

Launching on November 16, gigabit fiber internet is now offered in parts of Reno, Sparks and the surrounding communities. These one gigabit connections from AT&T’s Fiber network are available to area houses, apartments and small businesses.

Fiber optic speeds can be anywhere from 100 megabits per second to 100 gigabits per second, making them more than 10 times faster than the highest traditional cable speeds. Most cable internet providers offer a maximum of 60 megabits per second, but AT&T will offer 1 gigabit.

When a single home has up to 50 internet-connected devices or appliances, these are all competing for internet bandwidth and require a larger tunnel
