The U.S. Census Bureau recorded about 45,000 people who left the Bay Area from July 2016 to July 2017.

Many of these folks are making Reno their home. Why? The Reno Gazette Journal interviewed five Golden State transplants about why they were attracted to our area. They all work for tech startups and our quality of life was a major motivation to relocate. Many have been familiar with our region for years and witnessed the city’s RENOvation and improvement after the recession when some of the biggest tech names in the game came to the area.

Gone are the days when people flocked to Reno to waste dollar bills on slot machines and tables. Today, the Biggest Little City is completely different.

Just south of the Truckee River is the hip Midtown area, the “it” place to enjoy the city. Shops, restaurants and bars inhabit early 20th century bungalows and give it an eclectic feel. This neighborhood arose from entrepreneurs finding their way during the recession and because of that there is a feeling of authenticity found there. Business owners will recommend their competition with a smile and a sense of community is in the air. The people here have one thing in common – they’ve all come together to create something special from what was once considered seedy.

7x7 Magazine has just hailed the Biggest Little City as the newest spot to sample trendy and delicious foods. The past few years has seen an influx of culture into Reno, with foodie additions like cold-pressed juice bars, artisan coffee shops, French cuisine, wine bars, Mediterranean and beyond.
