A time capsule was stashed away in the cornerstone of a Masonic lodge in Reno from the year 1872.
What was inside this artifact?

Leaders of the Freemasons and local experts joined Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve last month to unveil the
materials from inside the lead box. The time capsule was hidden in what was recently the oldest
standing commercial building in the city founded four years after Nevada was granted statehood in
1864.

Inside they discovered silver dollars minted in Carson City and San Francisco, and a piece of wood from
Sutter’s Mill where the discovery of gold sparked the California Gold Rush. Other items inside were a
quartz specimen from the drill at Sutter’s Mill, a harmonica, a business card from the Young Men’s
Christian Association (YMCA)

Reno launched from number 11 last year to number 6 this year in the annual “America’s Best Cities 2018” list.

From the buzz, the recreation and the booming tech industry, Reno was a no brainer to land in the top ten overall among small cities. Nevada landed a one-two punch with Las Vegas ranking as the number 5 best large city. The Resonance Consultancy releases the rankings, with their clout as a global destination branding consulting firm with offices in NYC and Vancouver.

The report bases its rankings on six different categories, a mix of traditional and non-traditional metrics like economic factors, infrastructure, housing affordability, Google results and social media trends. It’s no longer accurate to rely only on economic indicators.

Reno has repainted its image and now it’s challenging Silicon Valley with its attractive business structure.

“There was only one place to go, and that was up,” said Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve.

In 2011, unemployment peaked at nearly 14% when Governor Brian Sandoval signed a law aiming to diversify the state’s economy. He recognized that gambling wasn’t enough to support the state’s economy and a sustainable workforce.

Reno has scored some big wins, starting with a new, highly automated factory run by Ardagh Group SA. The factory produces 3.5 million cans of tomato paste and other food products in just one day. In 2014, Tesla chose Reno out of six other locations to build its greatly anticipated Gigafactory. The Gigafactory is the largest in
