Snowsport enthusiasts are patiently waiting for the powder to fall on Lake Tahoe’s ski resorts. Here’s all that’s new for the 2018/2019 season.

Believe it or not, ski season has begun in the Tahoe region and the hopes for another long and strong winter are high. Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe opened limited terrain the weekend of October 19 for season-pass holders and plans to reopen to the public this weekend (October 26) with limited terrain. Mt. Rose is usually the first to open due to its area-high base elevation of 8,260 feet.

Divided between California and Nevada is Lake Tahoe, or as the indigenous Washoe Indians called it “The Lake of the Sky”. Whatever activities you’re into, the area holds adventure every day of the year. With the dozens of world-class resorts, terrain parks and backcountry for skiing, snowboarding and other snow bunny fun, winter is just a starting point for adventure-seekers. Those resorts are counting down to the 2017-18 season. Sugar Bowl reported the most snowfall of 14” and Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows was close behind at 12”. Boreal up at Donner Summit had 7” of powder and Mt. Rose reported 3-4”.

Lake Tahoe got so much snow, people are talking about skiing all summer into next season.

Andy Wirth, CEO of Squaw Valley, has proposed that the resort stay open through the Fourth of July weekend – if not all the way into the 2017-18 winter season. After the most snow in more than 20 years, some of the Lake’s ski resorts saw more 700 inches of snowfall.

“I’ll drop something on you that you may not be expecting,” Wirth told Truckee Tahoe Radio on April 15. “We are actually considering staying open through the summer and fall so it becomes the ’16-17-18 season. We’re taking a hard look at that. Maybe we spin Shirley [a lift on the mountain’s back side] through the summer, ‘cause there’s so much snow up there.”
