With the highest concentration of ski resorts in North America, it’s no wonder Reno-Tahoe is home to so many Winter Olympic athletes. For the third straight winter event, local athletes won a region-best four medals. This year, Reno’s David Wise won the silver medal in the ski halfpipe, to add to this previous collection of two gold medals.

Northern Lake Tahoe played host to the 1960 Olympic Games in Squaw Valley, one of the largest ski areas in the United States. The popular landmark has served as inspiration for everyday skiers and local Olympic hopefuls. North Lake Tahoe hosts the Spartan Race World Championship for the third consecutive year in a row. 

From September 30 to October 1, Squaw Valley Ski Resort will be transformed into the obstacle racing's preeminent championship event. Featuring more than 10,000 of the world's greatest athletes from more than 30 countries, the event will be entertaining for spectators and racers alike. Competitors will go head to head to win $100,000 in cash and prizes, as part of the $500,000 in cash and prizes awarded during the 2017 race season – the most of any singular Spartan Race.  

There will be 500 elite athletes from more than 30 countries as well that will put their skills and conditioning to the test in both individual and team
