New 200-Acre City Park to Open This Spring

Sierra Vista Park is set to begin construction next month and is scheduled to open to the public in early May.

Director of Parks of Recreation of Reno, Andy Bass, says that they finished construction of the perimeter trail around the park last summer, and at a recent City Council meeting the city approved to start building the entrance gate. More than 200 acres will be getting a new life at the site of the former Northgate Golf Course. The area has been empty since 2009 and it’s a great opportunity to have open space preserved in the city.

The City of Reno bought the property in 2011 for $2.5 million, but was waiting to see how the city grew before deciding what to make of it. Now they are moving forward with rehabilitation and plan to add biking and walking paths, a playground, an amphitheater, an archery range and a nature loop.

The city will start building multiple biking trails starting in April.

“They are going to create three single bike trails for mountain biking that will be great for the park, but will also connect to Peavine bike trails”, explains Bass.
