The old Galena Lodge welcomes a trio of brand-new businesses, the perfect pit stops before or apres ski!

For 30+ years, the Alpine lodge on Mount Rose Highway was home to restaurants. You’ll find the quaint location just a few minutes beyond Montreux, in the Galena Forest area as the road rises towards Lake Tahoe. The Galena Forest Inn was built and opened in the lodge in 1983 by Reno culinary figures Gaudenz Derungs and Walter Zahnd. Julius Weiss, another Reno chef, bought the restaurant in 1988 and ran it for a decade before it was purchased by Craig Cunningham, another longtime local restauranteur. Later in 2005, Sierra Solitaire set up and wasn’t around for long. The Lodge at Galena followed and was open until 2013.

Ăn – Asian Kitchen & Bar

Ăn is Vietnamese for “eat” and the restaurant carries on the tradition of Asian food by occupying the architecturally distinct location that held Café de Thai for many years. Located at 7499 Longely Lane.

Located in Midtown, you can get all the German-inspired food at this German beer hall. There aren’t many others like it in town and you can even score vegan tacos there too. Located at 713 S. Virginia St.

Reno is a unique city because it perfectly captures the mix of big-city attractions and a small-town vibe. A lot has changed in the last few years and there is a new vibe of re-energized ways to eat, drink and play. Here’s our suggestion for a 24-hour, fun-filled adventure.

Saturday afternoon

Kick off at the Grand Sierra Resort with their ice skating rink near the resort pool. Hit the ice with your skates, then grab some apres-skate hot chocolate and s’mores from the bar. You can head inside to warm up, or get toasty by one of the firepits. If you’d rather stay inside, they have tons of great options – bowling, laser tag, an arcade, indoor golf and more.

Now it’s time for dinner! Reno’s Riverwalk is a great place for a

Boba tea, Vietnamese, Indian with flair and, of course, pizza, are all featured in this round of up and coming restaurants throughout Reno.

Ciria’s Cocina Fine Mexican Dining – Lakeside Dr.

Ciria’s will be opening soon in the Shops at Bartley Ranch in the old “A Taste of Thai” space. This center is on Lakeside Drive south of McCarran Boulevard and also include Luciano’s, Pedalers Deli/Icecycle Creamery and, at the south end, the delicious pies of Smiling with Hope Pizza.

Reno residents are being blessed with more options for food delivery, now from grocery stores.

Shipt, an online grocery delivery service began offering same-day delivery from Safeway on July 26 and Door Dash, an online restaurant delivery, soon followed suite on August 1. For either, orders can be placed through their app on iPhone or Android, or on their website.

Shipt and Door Dash aren’t the only other food delivery platforms running amuck in Reno. They’ve joined the crowd including Uber Eats, Instacart and drivers from Grubhub. These launches are following a macro-trend in which consumers desire time savings, convenience and an ecommerce experience with their food delivery.

As you roam around Tahoe’s 72 miles of shoreline wondering what to do next, be sure to check out these fabulous eateries. What could be better than an umbrella-shaded table on a restaurant deck where the cool breeze is highlighted by even cooler margaritas? Nothing. Nothing is better.

Hint: Call ahead for a reservation on the deck and remember to be patient. At the end of the day, everyone else wants to sit on a deck and watch the sunset too.

Doesn’t matter if it’s a bachelorette party or a family

Gone are the days when people flocked to Reno to waste dollar bills on slot machines and tables. Today, the Biggest Little City is completely different.

Just south of the Truckee River is the hip Midtown area, the “it” place to enjoy the city. Shops, restaurants and bars inhabit early 20th century bungalows and give it an eclectic feel. This neighborhood arose from entrepreneurs finding their way during the recession and because of that there is a feeling of authenticity found there. Business owners will recommend their competition with a smile and a sense of community is in the air. The people here have one thing in common – they’ve all come together to create something special from what was once considered seedy.

They say that to go into the restaurant business, you have to be willing to be lucky. Last year, we saw that many folks showed that they were more than willing. Baski Acai Café arrived in Midtown with their trendy Acai bowls, along with sushi burritos from Finbomb Sushi Burrito. Arario mixed up the crowd by bringing Korean fusion to Midtown and Bab Café bringing the Korean

The Reno Airport just got more chic and stylish – the new Escape Lounge is now open for relaxation and connectivity.

Opening on December 15, the Escape Lounge is the latest in style, food, drink and connection. Located just beyond the security connector joining concourses B and C at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, this getaway spot has arrived just in time for the holidays.

Unlike other airport lounges, Escape is open to all passengers in whichever class of service. Fees are $40 in advance and $45 for walk-in. American Express Platinum Card holders get the added perk of free access. The lounge is open daily from 4:30 am to 8pm and bookings can be made through their online service.
