Reno Gets Grocery Store Delivery

Reno residents are being blessed with more options for food delivery, now from grocery stores.

Shipt, an online grocery delivery service began offering same-day delivery from Safeway on July 26 and Door Dash, an online restaurant delivery, soon followed suite on August 1. For either, orders can be placed through their app on iPhone or Android, or on their website.

Shipt and Door Dash aren’t the only other food delivery platforms running amuck in Reno. They’ve joined the crowd including Uber Eats, Instacart and drivers from Grubhub. These launches are following a macro-trend in which consumers desire time savings, convenience and an ecommerce experience with their food delivery.

In the past five years, deliveries of restaurant food has risen 10% on a domestic scale according to a report from the NPD Group, a leading market research firm. Forbes is even predicting that worldwide food delivery sales could reach more than $360 billion by 2030. Millenials are the biggest adopters of the latest new kitchen skill – click, tap and swipe.

In Reno, it costs $99 a year to join Shipt. Not only does Safeway give same-day delivery in Reno (and 12 other cities across the nation), but people first signing up can try out the membership free for the first two-weeks and get a $15 coupon on their first order.

“Safeway customers already know the value of convenience, and this expansion gives them a new way to access their favorite Safeway signature products,” said Bill Smith, founder and CEO of Shipt.

Shipt members order, arrange a delivery window, pay for their groceries and other household goods in the app or on the site. Shipt is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Target and doesn’t deliver tobacco products or prescriptions.

Door Dash launched in Reno as its 1,000th city and it makes delivery from more than 800 restaurants possible. Craving the cumin-spiked lamb meatballs from Centro? No problem. Do you absolutely need that seafood udon from Arario? You got it. The Carne Asada burrito from Roberto’s? Okay!

“We are delighted to open up our platform in the Biggest Little City,” said Tony Xu, co-founder and CEO of Door Dash (who got his start in his mom’s restaurant). Xu spoke to Reno’s “eclectic food scene of nationally recognized and family-owned establishments.”

Door Dash delivery and service fees vary by restaurant. You can see the fees on the checkout screen or by clicking on the delight score on a restaurant’s menu page. Delivery is free for your first order.

To celebrate the Reno debut of Door Dash, now through Sept. 1, locals can use the promo code DASH2RENO for $5 off an order of $15 or more.

Through August 31, the company will donate $1 from each order placed in Reno to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada and Feeding America.
