New Middle School in South Reno Will Serve Thousands

A new middle school is coming to South Reno in 2020!

A project in the making since last fall, the Washoe County School District (WCSD) Board of Trustees has voted unanimously to aware the final construction contract for the new school in Arrowcreek to Clark/Sullivan Construction. This means that building could begin as early as this week!

WCSD has recently restructured their middle school model to include sixth through eighth graders in an effort to alleviate crowding for young learners. The elementary model will include kindergarten through fifth graders which would mean that sixth graders will be moving into middle schools starting next school year. Letters went out from the principals of schools to the children who will be moving up to middle school next year.

This is a good move to alleviate the overcrowding in nearby elementary schools by the WCSD. Law and policy-makers in the area have been commended with making fast moves to accommodate the growing population in our area. Providing access to education and rezoning the new school boundary will adjust almost all the middle and elementary schools south of I-80.

“One of the highlights of our jobs as Trustees is overseeing the capital funding that the community approved in 2016,” says WCSD Board President Katy Simon Holland. “The open, competitive low-bid process got us a local contractor and more than 91 percent of the funds going to local subcontractors. Working with our community oversight group, the Capital Funding Protection Committee, we are ensuring transparency and accountability with these funds, and we continue to create good middle-class jobs in our community. The absolute best thing, however, is that this one middle school will benefit almost every elementary and middle school student south of Interstate 80.”

The school is a specific part of WCSD’s identified projects on the WC1 2016 ballot question, which you can learn more about here. The passage of WC1 means that the WCSD now had adequate funding to repair older schools and build these new schools to give our community’s children better access to education. Two other middle schools are currently under construction under the same model as the Arrowcreek school: Desert Skies in Sun Valley and Sky Ranch in Spanish Springs.

What is a new school without a name? The new South Reno middle school has been fondly dubbed “Arrowcreek” by locals because of the neighborhood it resides in. However, new name choices will be discussed by the School Naming Committee to be considered at a future Board of Trustees meeting. The committee members will create a semi-final list of no more than 10 names to be considered. You can read all of the name suggestions here!
