Kokanee Salmon Migration at the Tahoe Fall Fish Festival

The Taylor Creek Visitor Center is the place to be this weekend to see the kokanee salmon make their way upstream for spawning.

The Fall Fish Festival returns on October 6 – 7 from 10a.m. to 4 p.m. each day and all of the salmon have turned bright red just in time. The Taylor Creek Visitor Center is located on California Route 89 about 3 miles north of South Lake Tahoe. The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit hosts the event in collaboration with Great Basin Institute and the festival offers opportunities to learn about native fish species in Tahoe and its tributaries. The Lahontan cutthroat trout is considered “threatened” as a species by the federal government.

On Saturday, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has a giant inflatable fish that will make an appearance as a gateway to fun activities for the kids. Both days will have appearances from our local mascots, Lulu the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout and Sandy and Rocky Salmon. Even Smokey the Bear will make special appearances. The events for the kiddos include face painting, a food vendor, educational booths and a streamside information station. There will also be some trail runs planned on Sunday for the active crowd, sponsored by Tahoe Mountain Milers.

Ocktoberfest is also taking place at Camp Richardson this weekend with a bevy of Bavarian-inspired brews and family fun activities. Festival goers can expect all the same treats as last year with an all new location at Commons Beach. The festival is free and open to the community, featuring craft beers from some of the region’s best breweries, a village filled with craft vendors, Bavarian-themed games, local food, music and more. The breweries and vendors you’ll find this year include: Alibi Ale Works, Lagunitas, Auburn Ale House, Sierra Nevada Brewing, Loomis Basin Brewing, Founders Brewing Company, Pioneer Cocktail Club, Common Ciders and wine from Barefoot Wine & Bubbly. Food vendors include: Men Wielding Fire, Crepe Hearts, Big Blue BBQ, The Buck Stops Here, Rubshack and desserts from Sugar Pine Cakery. Craft vendors include: Fresh Air Clothing, Stasher Headwear, Elizabeth & Marin, Tahoe Heartbeat, Eurca Distribution, Tahoe Mountain Soap Company, Tahoe Grown, Bikepath Art Collective and the Paint your Pumpkin kids activity with North Tahoe Arts.
