Grab a Picnic and Hike in Lake Tahoe

The fall views in Lake Tahoe are absolutely stunning this time of year and we have the best hikes to enjoy a picnic and the views.

The best hikes end with aged cheese, cured meats and other delicious picnic items. Before the snow begins to flurry, fall is a great time to get out and enjoy all the diverse beauty of the Sierra Nevada. The many different colors and the crisp, clear air pair perfectly with the clear blues of Lake Tahoe’s waters (and of course a snack). No matter your hiking level, the five below range in distance and difficulty so there is a hike here for you!

Lake Margaret

The hike to Lake Margaret is an out-and-back trail of about 4.6 miles. Located in the El Dorado National Forest, there are large granite rocks all along the alpine lake that are just begging for you to set up a picnic spot. The trailhead is close to the lake, near Kirkwood Mountain Resort. There is a cute little river along the train and there are a number of activity options including biking, horseback riding, snowshoeing and more. Dogs are allowed and this trail is rated as a moderate difficulty with a 534 foot elevation gain. More…

Woods, Winnemucca and Round Top Lakes

Take your pick of any of the three lakes above to sit by while you enjoy your chicken, apple and brie sandwich that’s been tempting you all morning. This is a loop trail of about 5 miles and a 1,200 foot elevation gain into the Mokelumne Wilderness. You’ll get to eat up sweeping views of the mountains, old mining equipment and beautiful creeks to set the soundtrack for your day. If you want to add 4^th of July Lake for an additional 2.6 miles there’s access from the main trail. This trail is dog friendly and kid-friendly. More…

Spooner Lake

This hike is doable for hikers of all skill levels. The trail is a 2.4 mile loop around Spooner Lake and has cute little benches along the way to stop and eat, or just soak in the views. Near Glenbrook, Nevada, the trail also features many different activity options and you can get to it all year-round. Bring your dog, but bring its leash too. More…

PICNIC ROCK

The aptly named Picnic Rock is the ultimate spot for dining al fresco. This trek is along the Tahoe Rim Trail near Kings Beach and is a 3.1 mile in-and-out trail with about 730 feet of elevation gain. When you reach the vista, your jaw will drop at the excellent view of the lake from the rocky outcrop. MOUNT TALLAC

This is a big one – dragging your lunch about 3,200 feet up Mount Tallac and walking 10 miles on uneven shale.
