Dinosaurs and Cats in Space: Family Things to Do in Reno

Posted by Brooke Sullivan on Friday, April 6th, 2018 at 10:53am

Reno never disappoints with its wide offerings of activities and we have some great events that are fun for the whole family!

Many of the family events happening this week involve furry creatures that we know and love. Well, some are not so furry. From educational to just plain old fun, we guarantee you and the kiddos will be entertained by one of the following events.

Jurassic Quest

Head over to the Reno-Sparks Convention center this weekend to Jurassic Quest. They have a set-up full of dinos from the Jurassic, Cretaceous and Triassic periods. They also have high-quality replicas of dinosaurs from North America – and they MOVE! You can also look at fossils that actual paleontologists have dug right out of the dirt. Or, catch a ride atop a 24-foot high T-Rex.

“Larry: Cat in Space”

A cartoon story of a stowaway cat who takes a trip to the moon. Kids are already curious about outer space and this adventure lets them see it from a critter’s point-of-view. Together, you will watch Larry’s family down below on Earth as he explores the moon. You can catch this show up at UNR at the Fleischmann Planetarium. Bonus: They have a great gift shop full of moon rocks, science experiments and other educational and fun goodies.

Paw Patrol Live!

Paw Patrol has swept the nation and been entertaining little ones with their cute cartoon characters. This show is two days only at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts. You will see a Great Adventure Bay Race between two mayors, one of which has gone missing. Enter Paw Patrol to the rescue! Chase, Everest, Rubble, Rocky and more of the crew are here to save the day. “No job is too big, no pup is too small.”

Hall of Heroes: Discover Your Superpower

Now through April 22, kids and adults can find what makes them super at the Wilbur D. May Museum at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park. Explore superhero costumes and memorabilia, movie props and more. Don’t forget to test your powers at the various stations – balance, speed and strength!

UNR Mobile Engineering Lab

Whether your kids (or you) totally understand engineering, this lab is designed to teach and expand upon knowledge. There will be engineering students from UNR presenting on various topics in a kid-friendly way. They will also encourage participation with hands-on demonstrations to get kids interested in STEM. The UNR students will also be able to talk about different careers in the STEM field. This event is free and all ages are encouraged to attend!

Dog Days Family Event

Grab the kids and the dog(s) and head over to Cabela’s for a day full of fun. The Dog Days Family Event will gift the first 100 dogs who arrive with a free toy and free photo downloads with their dog. There will be different demonstrations for our furry friends, as well as a dog trick contest. This is another free event!

Kids Cook!

Don’t miss this opportunity to help your child build cooking skills! These life skills will last through your child’s lifetime. Nothing To It! Culinary Center has monthly kids cooking class for 90-minutes. Third through sixth graders will have the opportunity to try out new culinary techniques and make a tasty dish that they can enjoy.
