Lake Tahoe is enjoying the largest snowpack in 22 years.

Experts say that the snow will last until mid-summer and several of the local ski resorts are extending their season into June – some even to the Fourth of July. This translates to excellent spring conditions and dual days, the term used to describe weather perfect for multiple activities.

Ski in the morning and go kayaking or hiking in the afternoon. While you’re at it, don’t forget to stop at the area’s best and newest restaurants and bars.

North Lake

Mount Rose Ski Tahoe has the most snow in North America with 700 inches of snowfall, according to the National Weather Service. That equates to the height of the Yerba Buena Tunnel on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Their Winter’s Creek Lodge has beautiful views of the Truckee Meadows along with quick access to hot pools and stunning spring hikes. Head into Reno to enjoy the waterfall at the end of the Hunter Creek Trail hike or relax in one of the area’s surrounding spas and hot springs.

Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows resort has about 620 inches of snow. Spend the day skiing and afterwards soak your sore muscles at the High Camp Pool and Hot Tub, which sits at about 8,200 feet. Northstar California has a season total of 607 inches of snow and some of the longest beginner runs on the north shore. In addition to the great skiing, both the Resort at Squaw and the Ritz Lake Tahoe have year-round outdoor heated pools with amazing views of the surrounding mountain peaks.

South Shore

Heavenly Ski Resort in South Lake Tahoe has a season total of 600 inches across its 4,800 acres of skiing. Beginners can start at the Groove with its smaller rails and wedges or just play all day on the tubing hill. Not into the snow? Hop on the Tahoe Bleu Wave, a luxurious new 70-foot yacht featuring winter and spring lunch cruises to Emerald Bay. The shore’s newest Joie de Vivre hotel, Hotel Becket, offers chilled visitors indoor hot tubs, sauna, a private beach and the resort’s Bernese mountain dog, Remington, there to greet guests.

West Shore

Take a Friday night Sunset Snowshoe Tour with Tahoe Adventure Company. Every Friday until April, the company will guide you through deep, snowy forests while giving you a Tahoe history lesson. If you can’t catch a tour, don’t worry you can rent your own shoes at West Shore Sports and take on the snowy peaks yourself. Or don a wetsuit and take the Discover Paddleboarding Tour with TAC at the Tahoe Vista Recreation Area or rent your own SUP, single or double kayak from Watermans Landing in Carnelian Bay. Tahoe never freezes and the lake doesn’t fill up with speed boats until July, so paddling out into the clear, cold waters of the lake you will be sure to find yourself alone.

For less than $20, rent sledding discs or skates at the new Tahoe City Winter Sports Park. Enjoy sledding, ice skating, fat-tire biking and cross-country skiing all in one spot. They also have a pet-friendly snowshoe track and a separate trail for Fat Bike riding. The lake level snow lasts a while and these Fat Bike trails will be the smoothest and most unique bike trails at the lake.
