Springtime Activities Warm Up Lake Tahoe

One of the largest winters on record graced the Reno-Tahoe region and each week we can feel it getting a little bit warmer.

When it seemed like spring would never come, suddenly the sun is shining! Those bluebird days put the itch of summer in our shoes and we’re looking forward to enjoying so many springtime activities. You can enjoy the best of both worlds, or as locals affectionately call it “The Tahoe Trifecta”.

What is the Trifecta? Golf, boat/kayak and ski all in the same day. Seems impossible, but we can guarantee you that it isn’t. The weather is just warm enough to be comfortable, but not so warm that the lake is full of boats and paddlers.

Mountain Adventures

Many local ski resorts will be closing by the end of April, so get those turns in now! The good news is that the crowds are smaller and smaller, so you can really get quality time exploring runs without having to dodge the many bodies usually zipping around. Some resorts are staying open past normal closure dates: Heavenly Mountain Resort will be open on weekends through Memorial Day and Squaw Valley plans to offer runs into early July.

Pick up a pair of snowshoes at many of the local shops and rental stands around the lake and take a leisurely stroll, or a strenuous hike. That’s the beauty of snowshoeing – there are basically no perquisites and it’s as difficult or simple a venture as you want to make it. For an easy trek, head out to Fallen Leaf lake area or Spooner. For something more difficult, you can make the journey to Winnemucca Lake off Carson Pass, or Brockway Summit by Kings Beach in Tahoe. The snow is DEEP in these areas, but the views make it all worth it.

If you’re over the snow, many of our local hiking trails are starting to peek out as the snow melts. The Carson Valley is an excellent place to start, as the snow doesn’t last long on the valley floor. Hit the Eagle Ridge Trail near Genoa and get your 7ish miles of hiking in. Or try Hunter Creek trail right here in Reno, a beautiful in-and-out trek that rewards you with a gorgeous waterfall at the end.

Dining/Drinking

Spring also means eating and drinking on patios! There’s nothing better than a cold beverage in the warmth of the sun. Heavenly Village has plenty of outdoor dining options, the Hyatt and the Ritz are just a short jaunt from South Reno, and you can’t forget about beautiful Northstar California (plus the shopping!). You could even pack a lunch, or grab something to go, and head out for a picnic on one of our many local beaches.
