The Reno area stays fit with a new indoor climbing facility.

Mesa Rim Climbing and Fitness Center has just opened at 970 Harvard Way in Reno and will provide another of the many fitness options for Northern Nevadans. Reno and Tahoe have a large population of fitness enthusiasts, most likely due to the many fantastic outdoor recreation options.

“Reno is such an amazing outdoor community,” said Marlowe Kulley, co-founder and manager of the Reno facility. “For people who love the outdoors, this is a great way to train. The goal with our facility is to create not only a big and impressive facility, but an all encompassing facility.”

Mesa Rim has 23,000 stretching square feet of climbing terrain and 52-foot climbing walls, for the adrenaline junkies. Along with the climbing and bouldering area, fitness freaks can enjoy a yoga studio, weight and cardio areas, locker rooms, a sauna, gear shop, deck, community space and much more. Officially opening on July 31, Mesa Rim had a grand opening celebration on August 5^th.

Day passes to the decked-out facility cost $19, or you can snag a membership for $70 a month. Either way, you get access to all the facilities along with all the classes. No drop-in rates on top of the gym fee! They also offer discounts for students, seniors, military and first responders.

The staff even switches out the routes on the climbing walls on a frequent basis to challenge their members. The facility caters to all skill levels and has a range of programs and activities for kids. You can even plan your corporate retreat or a team building session. This would be a great tool for business that are new to the area, or have recently expanded.

Prior to the facility, there was nothing on the three-acre plus lot of land so the founders could design everything from scratch. Clark/Sullivan Construction was the contractor and worked alongside MBA Architecture + Interiors to bring the vision to life. Kulley said that they looked into renovating existing buildings around town, but nothing fit their must-have list of size, location, enough parking, etc.

Besides Mesa Rim, the Reno area has a couple of other impressive climbing and bouldering facilities. BaseCamp’s 164-foot outdoor climbing wall and 7,000-square-foot indoor bouldering park is located in the Whitney Peak Hotel and RockSport Indoor Climbing in Sparks.

Mesa Rim’s founders come from San Diego climbers Bob Kain and Ian McIntosh. They have opened several full-service climbing facilities and a dedicated climbing training center in the San Diego area. After teaming up with Kulley, her husband and some local investors, the couple decided to expand in the Reno area.

"From a business side, we just feel so lucky that we got in a market that just has such great potential," Kulley said. "(Reno) is really reinventing itself as a great place to live and work and play and for us to be part of that and to add another aspect for people to play is really exciting."
