Divided between California and Nevada is Lake Tahoe, or as the indigenous Washoe Indians called it “The Lake of the Sky”. Whatever activities you’re into, the area holds adventure every day of the year. With the dozens of world-class resorts, terrain parks and backcountry for skiing, snowboarding and other snow bunny fun, winter is just a starting point for adventure-seekers. There’s also countless hiking trails for trekkers, mountain bikers and more – and we haven’t even gotten to the actual lake yet. Boat, sail, wakeboard, SUP, waterski and even surf on Tahoe’s crystal-clear waters.

Snow lovers rejoice! At the north end of Lake Tahoe, award-winning Northstar California Resort has a challenging terrain park, halfpipe and a huge collection of jumps. The Ritz-Carlton spits you right onto the powder, practically from the lobby. Don’t forget the fabulous shopping, restaurants and recreation (including an ice rink!) found at Northstar Village. Also found in the area is renowned Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows, which has some of the toughest terrain in the area, along with Boreal, Heavenly and the Sugar Bowl. These all have runs and backcountry zones that are revered by locals and tourists alike.

More interested in conquering the mountains on two wheels? Lake Tahoe has plenty of paved and unpaved paths and trails for both cyclists and mountain bikers. The hardcore folks can hit the Flume Ride, or the expert sections of the famed Tahoe Rim Trail. More routes can be found near Tahoe City such as Paige Meadows, Glass Mountain, Thunder Cliffs and the Missing Link. Or, stick to the asphalt and take a leisurely course right around the lake – just a quick 72 miles.

Tahoe’s waters are nearly translucent, with just a hint of sapphire. Boating, sailing, SCUBA diving, SUP and surfing are all great options, the latter more so when a crazy storm kicks up the waves. The lake is surrounded by world-class beaches, coves and shoreline just begging you to stretch out your legs and relax by the lapping shores. Those looking for more thrills can take on whitewater rafting on the Truckee, American and Yuba Rivers that surround the area.

Hiking and horseback riding are available all throughout the region. Top of the list for must-see is Eagle Falls, Cascade Falls and Rubicon trails, while Five Lakes Trail and Secret Cove/Chimney Beach Loop are absolutely stunning. Whether you’d like to take an hour-long stroll, or a multi-day camping trip the lake is sure to please. Don’t forget to visit one of the many state parks while you’re at it!
