7x7 Names Reno a “Foodie Destination”

From street food to shawarma, Reno has endless new food options.

7x7 Magazine has just hailed the Biggest Little City as the newest spot to sample trendy and delicious foods. The past few years has seen an influx of culture into Reno, with foodie additions like cold-pressed juice bars, artisan coffee shops, French cuisine, wine bars, Mediterranean and beyond. Not to mention Food Truck Fridays, an event that runs in Idlewild Park from May to September every Friday featuring over 20 local food trucks serving up gourmet eats in a picturesque park setting.

“Art Deco Breakfast”

For a fresh breakfast, head to the new and edgy RAWBRY juice bar for a cold-pressed juice. Located in the recently renovated Basement, RAWBRY is on the bottom floor of a 1930s post office located downtown by the Truckee River. Walk over to Global Coffee, just kitty-corner from RAWBRY, for a locally brewed pick-me-up. A hop, skip and a jump away, head over to Jus in Midtown for a fresh-blended all organic smoothie and more cold-pressed juice options. Looking for artisan coffee? Magpie Coffee Roasters in Midtown hand roasts their beans for classic drip coffee. Eat a full breakfast at Daughter’s Café, located in an adorable restored Victorian house and enjoy their shirred eggs baked in cream and parmesan or fresh beignets with sausage and fruit. Two Chicks is another hearty breakfast spot in Midtown with comfort foods like the Steak Bene, a sliced chuck steak, asparagus, grilled onion and poached eggs over fresh English muffins.

“Out-and-Roundabout Lunches”

Near Downtown, the Battle Born Café boasts a “guilty” and “not guilty” menu, a play on the restaurant’s location near the courthouse. Fittingly, the guilty menu has a bacon bouquet with five different bacon options on one plate. For organic and locally sourced fare, eat at Great Full Gardens where the soup of the day will be sure to knock your socks off. Liberty Food and Wine Exchange serves arepas out of its artisan wine bar and shop, including Colombian flatbreads topped with flavorful pancetta and roasted corn. Roundabout Grill at the non-gaming Whitney Peak Hotel offers comfort food with a twist, like their turkey burger with apricot chutney. Indulge your Middle Eastern cravings at Shawarmageddon with wraps of lamb, chicken or falafel. For dessert, try a sweet Arabic doughnut topped with orange-blossom frosting.

“Snackin’ on the Streets”

Street food: the instant satisfaction, the tantalizing smells and the surprising flavor combinations that keep you craving more. This trend is so popular in Reno that dozens of food trucks roam the city daily or gather together for party nights. Check their Facebook pages to see where they will be parked, but most likely you will find 2, or 12 in the downtown and midtown areas. Enjoy vegan food from Nom Eats or Electric Blue Elephant, wood-fired pizza from Fire on the Mountain and the freshest gelato you have ever tasted at Bibo Freddo. There’s even a twist on egg rolls at Still Rollin’ food truck, from sweet to savory. Don’t go without trying the Ando Mando’s Buffalo Mac Roll with the Fortune Cookie Fried Ice Cream for dessert.

“Dinner Feasts + Small Plates”

Go global! Midtown’s Calafuria offers delicious apertivos from their Italian inspired dinner menu. Pig out on wild boar and a four course prix fixe dinner on weekends for less than $40. Indulge in libations and artisan apps at the Depot Craft Brewery, inside of a restored railroad building. We love the striped bass crudo and Depot Burger with Russian dressing. At Sierra St. Kitchen & Cocktails, enjoy raw menu items and small plates like poke and steak tartar. Feast is located in a former art appraiser’s building and has the best seafood in town along with interesting options like pan-seared venison, ostrich and kangaroo.
