24 Hours in Reno

Reno is a unique city because it perfectly captures the mix of big-city attractions and a small-town vibe. A lot has changed in the last few years and there is a new vibe of re-energized ways to eat, drink and play. Here’s our suggestion for a 24-hour, fun-filled adventure.

Saturday afternoon

Kick off at the Grand Sierra Resort with their ice skating rink near the resort pool. Hit the ice with your skates, then grab some apres-skate hot chocolate and s’mores from the bar. You can head inside to warm up, or get toasty by one of the firepits. If you’d rather stay inside, they have tons of great options – bowling, laser tag, an arcade, indoor golf and more.

Saturday evening

Now it’s time for dinner! Reno’s Riverwalk is a great place for a stroll and there’s tons of restaurants and bars to pop in to warm up. Head to Campo for inventive farm-to-table Italian fare with handmade pastas, wood-fired pizzas and even more. The menu will change with the season and some favorites right now include a sensational bucatini carbonara with pancetta and sugar-snap peas and a BLT and avocado pizzas.

If you get dinner early, you can catch a show afterwards at the Pioneer Center. The Reno Philharmonic, the Nevada Festival Ballet and the Nevada Opera all call the theater home. There are musicals every month and even Broadway shows that come through the area. You could even head downstairs to the Pioneer Underground where comics from around the country gather to make guests roar with laughter. Grad a seat in the front if you want to be heckled but stay in the back if you’d rather be left alone.

After the show, keep the evening going at Bundox Bocce tucked inside the Renaissance Reno Downtown Hotel nearby. Play a round on one of the indoor bocce courts, or try your hand at giant Jenga, shuffleboard or the full bar.

Sunday morning

You can’t go wrong with Reno’s brunch and breakfast scene. The Stone House café has an eclectic mix of different eggs Benedict and fruit-topped waffles. Be sure to try one of their signature mimosas (or two).

After breakfast, hit the mountains and don’t worry about the cold. People always ski and snowboard, but try something new and hit some of Reno’s hiking trails. You can stop at Mountain Top Sports on Mount Rose Highway to rent some snowshoes.

Sunday afternoon

After a chilly day out in the sunshine, spend the rest of your day at South Creek Center. You can pick up a raspberry cream latter, minty mocha or a coconut and ginger Thai coffee at Bibo Coffee Co. Take it to go with a pastry, or enjoy it there. Do some shopping at Triggers Boutique or Home Means Nevada Co. There are also a couple of décor boutiques including the Freckled Frog and G.J. Rhodes. And depending on how thirsty you are, Beer NV and Whispering Vine Wine Co. are right nearby.

Finish off the weekend with a traditional Sicilian pie at SouthCreek Pizza. They are so dedicated to serving pizza that tastes like it came straight from Italy, they fly in their ingredients and use a wood-fired brick over pizza imported from Naples. Sit at the bar and you can see the pizza makers through the dough while you chow down.
